    BPH - Prostate Artery Embolization

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. It's a common condition in older men, where the prostate, which surrounds the urethra, gradually grows larger and can begin to squeeze the urethra, leading to urinary symptoms. These symptoms can include frequent urination, difficulty starting urination, a weak urine stream, and the feeling of not being able to empty the bladder completely. Although BPH is not cancerous and doesn't increase the risk of prostate cancer, it can significantly affect the quality of life due to its symptoms.

Prostate artery embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive procedure that helps alleviate symptoms of an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Guided by imaging, our interventional radiologist inserts a catheter through an artery in the wrist, directing it to the prostate's blood supply. Tiny beads are then released to block blood flow, causing the prostate to gradually shrink.

PAE effectively treats urinary issues related to BPH, such as frequent urination and incontinence, with a lower risk of side effects like erectile dysfunction compared to surgical options. Most patients see significant improvement and can resume normal activities soon after the procedure, although minor symptoms like fatigue or mild cramping may occur. PAE is an outpatient procedure with a shorter recovery time than surgery, but patients should avoid strenuous activities initially.
