Knee Pain | Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)
Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is a safe and effective one-hour minimally-invasive procedure that provides knee pain relief for patients with osteoarthritis (OA). The procedure is performed using a catheter and a tiny 1.3 mm needle. After the procedure, you will leave with just a band-aid.
Our physicians specialize in providing consultations, diagnosing, and treating knee pain, and offer genicular artery embolization (GAE) with advanced treatments tailored to our patients' needs.
(GAE) offers several advantages:
- Minimally Invasive: GAE is performed without surgical incisions, leading to faster recovery and fewer complications compared to traditional surgery.
- Enhanced Quality of Life: Patients often experience significant and long-lasting pain relief, which can reduce or eliminate the need for opioids and other pain medications.
- Reduced Need for Additional Treatments: The procedure can lessen the reliance on pain management injections or physical therapy, although these can still be used alongside GAE for enhanced relief.
- Durable Pain Relief: Studies indicate that GAE can provide substantial pain reduction for over two years, offering a sustainable solution for chronic knee pain.
Genicular Artery Embolization is a minimally-invasive procedure where our doctors reduce the blood flow to the inflamed synovium, which is the lining of the knee joint. This results in decreased inflammation associated with osteoarthritis creating rapid relief to the knee.
Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a novel, minimally invasive, nonsurgical intervention for patients with symptomatic knee Osteoarthritis who are refractory to other treatments yet reluctant to undergo or ineligible for Total Knee Replacement such as patients with mild-to-moderate OA or patients who are not a surgical candidate.
The Benefits of MISS:
- Safe: Our procedures prioritize patient safety, ensuring high standards of care.
- No Incision: Enjoy the benefits of surgery without the need for large incisions.
- Minimal Pain: Experience significantly less discomfort compared to traditional surgery.
- No Scarring: Our techniques minimize or eliminate visible scarring.
- No General Anesthesia: Procedures are performed without the need for general anesthesia, reducing risks and recovery time.
- Outpatient Procedure: Most of our treatments are outpatient, meaning you can return home the same day.
- Two-Hour Recovery Time: Recovery times are typically around two hours, getting you back on your feet faster.
- Go Home the Same Day: Spend less time in the hospital and more time recovering in the comfort of your home.
- Cost Effective: MISS procedures often cost less than traditional surgical methods.
Complete our Questionnaire
GAE is performed by an Interventional radiologist (IR) as an outpatient procedure using moderate sedation. It usually takes one to two hours.
During the procedure, our Board Certified Interventional Radiologist:
- Identifies target blood vessels
- Use temporary or permanent embolic agents to block the neovasculature
- Being at least 40 years old
- Having moderate to severe knee pain
- Having pain that doesn't respond to three months of conservative treatments
- Having MRI evidence of active synovitis
- Refusing or being ineligible for surgical management
- Having local knee tenderness
- Pain in one or both knees
- Knee pain when walking upstairs
- Knee stiffness upon waking up
- Persistent knee pain with activity
- You can resume light activities within the first week post-procedure.
- Initially, you may experience knee pain which will gradually decrease as the procedure takes effect.
- Avoid engaging in high-impact activities for at least two weeks following GAE.
- Reduction in knee pain
- Decreased swelling
- Improved flexibility
- Enhanced joint function
- Shortened recovery period
Here are some key benefits of Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE):
Minimally Invasive Procedure
GAE is a minimally invasive technique compared to traditional surgeries, which often come with extended recovery periods and potential complications. Typically performed under local anesthesia, GAE involves a small incision, leading to shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times.
Precision in Targeting
GAE specifically targets the genicular arteries, which are the primary source of knee pain. By blocking the blood flow to these arteries, GAE effectively alleviates pain without impacting surrounding tissues or organs.
Long-lasting Pain Relief
Clinical studies indicate that GAE can provide significant, long-term relief from knee pain, with many patients experiencing improvements in symptoms for up to two years or more. This lasting effect makes GAE an attractive option for those seeking a durable solution to chronic knee pain.
Reduced Dependence on Medication
By addressing the underlying cause of knee pain, GAE can lessen the need for pain medications, thereby reducing the risk of side effects associated with long-term drug use. This benefit is particularly important for patients who are sensitive to or prefer to avoid pharmaceutical treatments.
Enhanced Quality of Life
One of the most significant advantages of GAE is its potential to improve the quality of life for those suffering from knee pain. By restoring mobility, reducing discomfort, and enabling participation in daily activities, GAE helps patients regain their independence and fully engage in life's activities.
Considerations and Candidacy
While GAE offers numerous benefits, it may not be suitable for everyone. Eligibility should be determined based on individual factors such as the severity of knee pain, overall health, and medical history. Consulting with our qualified interventional radiologist is essential to assess suitability and explore available treatment options.
Diagnostic Tests for Genicular Artery Embolization
If you are experiencing knee pain, your doctor might recommend one or more of the following tests:
Patient Evaluation:
A detailed medical history and physical examination are conducted to assess overall health and knee pain.
Imaging Studies:
X-rays, MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), or CT (Computed Tomography) scans may be used to evaluate the knee joint and pinpoint the source of pain.
Pain Management Assessment:
For patients with chronic knee pain unresponsive to conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medications, or injections, GAE may be considered.
The decision to proceed with Genicular Artery Embolization is made after a thorough evaluation by our healthcare providers.
